As India gears up for the season of marathon, various running events jump in tandem to keep up the spirit of running. One such stellar marathon event is the IDBI Federal Life Insurance Spice Coast Marathon happening soon on Nov 12, 2017.

Recently, the organizing council announced that cricket legend, Sachin Tendulkar will flag off the 2017 Spice Coast Marathon. The annual marathon which takes place in Kochi boasts of one of the most picturesque race routes among the Indian Marathon events.

About the Spice Coast Marathon

The IDBI Federal Life Insurance Spice Coast Marathon ran its first race in the year 2014 and runners will soon get a chance to relive the beautiful running experience in the coastal region on November 12, 2017.

Powered by IDBI bank, the Spice Coast Marathon is organized by Kochi Corporation under the aegis of Soles of Cochin, District Tourism Promotion Council, and Kochi Metro Rail Limited.

The marathon event is certified by USA Track & Field and is known to organize one of the most orderly and well-conducted marathons in the country. Usually, the event has four race categories- Full Marathon (42.2 km), Half Marathon (21.1 km), Half Marathon Corporate Relay (21.1 km) and Family Fun Run (8 km) but this year only three races- Full Marathon (42.2 km), Half Marathon (21.1 km) and Family Fun Run (8 km) will be held.

For the past three years, the Spice Coast Marathon has seen an impressive gathering and this year, the organizers are expecting as many as 8000 participants! The aim of the marathon, as told by Kochi’s mayor, Soumini Jain, is to spread environmental awareness and to ‘say no to plastic.’

The Spice Coast Marathon 2017 registrations are open at present. Get onto the online registration site and create your account to begin. You can also register using your Facebook account.

Offline registration will be announced shortly. So, in case you want to enroll offline then keep checking the official Spice Coast Marathon site for updates.

The eligibility for the Spice Coast Marathon are as follows:

  • Full marathon- 18 years
  • Half marathon-13 years
  • Family Fun Run- 3.5 years

The race timings are as follows:

  • Full Marathon- starts at 4:00 am

Oh! How do we even begin to describe the Spice Coast Marathon race routes? To start with you are in a land that is delicately hemmed by the coastal line. Luscious greenery and clean, crisp air with a hint of spice aroma…doesn’t that sound like the ultimate marathon race map?

The IDBI Spice Marathon takes place in Kochi. All the three categories of races start from KK Premachandran Sports Complex, Willingdon Island, Kochi. And the route runs along the swaying palm trees and covers a couple of mesmerizing Cochin landmarks including the Willington Island, Fort Kochi and Naval Base area.

Basic FAQs

  1. When is the IDBI Federal Life Insurance Spice Coast Marathon 2017?
    12th of November 2017.
  2. Can I register on the day of the event?
    No registrations will be accepted on the main race day.
  3. How will my entry acceptance be intimated to me?
    On successful completion of registration, you will receive an email from eventjini confirming your registration.
  4. Can I pick-up my race kit on the same day as the race?
    Race kits will NOT be provided to runners on the day of the race.
  5. Where is the venue for bib distribution?
    The venue for Bib Distribution will be announced soon.
  6. Once applied can I cancel my entry and get a refund?
    Refund requests will NOT be entertained once registration has been completed.
  7. Can I change my race category once I have applied/my entry is confirmed?
    No, category change requests will be entertained. Re-registration will be required to change a race category.
  8. Can I transfer my registration to another person?
    No transfer of registrations will be permitted.
  9. I am a student and do not possess any of the above ID proofs. What do I submit along with my application?
    You can submit a scanned copy of your school/college ID card for registration.
  10. Can I authorize another person to pick up my race packet?
    Yes, the authorized person will be required to produce your photo id and an authorization letter to collect your race kit.
  11. Will there be space for car parking?
    There will be limited space for parking of vehicles close to the start.
  12. What is the best way to get to the start?
    The best way to get to the start would be to enter the island via Bristow Road. The Indira Gandhi road on the Island will be blocked as it is a part of the race course.
  13. Is the Spice Coast Marathon a road race or a trail race?
    The IDBI Federal Life Insurance Spice Coast Marathon is a road race.
  14. When does the finish line close?
    The finish line and the race shall come to a close at 10:30 hrs on the 12th of November.
  15. Is there a time limit to complete the Full Marathon?
    There is a 6-hours 30 minute time limit

Spice Coast Marathon Prizes

The IDBI Federal Spice Coast Marathon does not have any prize money. As said, “the race is conducted purely for the love of running and for people to experience the beauty of the marathon route.”

However, every runner who successfully completes their race within the stipulated time shall earn a unique medal as their prize as well as a souvenir from this scenic race.

You can download a hard copy of the certificate that shall be sent to your email id provided you successfully complete your race.

Marathon running isn't your every day brisk running. It demands a certain degree of training and a specially crafted diet plan. Here’s a quick training card for marathon beginners.

Pick the Right Shoes

Your decision of selecting the right running shoe is based on many factors such as the terrain, distance, runners’ weight, feet type and much more. Cushioning and flexibility are the two key features you should consider while picking up a running shoe. Long distance runners should opt for extra cushioning; it will boost your run and help to go the extra mile. Proper cushioning not only offers a comfortable run but also reduces the impact on your feet while hitting the surface and ensures energy return.

Your Running Garments

Choose garments in moisture wicking and perforated fabric to ensure faster sweat dry while keeping you 2 degrees cooler than the natural environment. Good ventilation and air flow mapping in the right zones are required for effective heat loss and increased air flow. Contemporary running attire goes beyond just a tee-shirt and pair of shorts. You can wear compression sports garments to increase agility and optimize your performance.

Pre-Training

Yes, before you even begin your marathon training, you should be able to run for at least 30 minutes without break. How much you can run is not important right now. Get your body used to the strenuous activity of running. Do a combination workout of run and walks during pre-training. This will ease your body into the exercise and minimizes the chance of a running injury.

Treadmill Running

You need to build your stamina before jumping into a marathon event. Learn to keep a track of the distance and time. And to do that start training on the treadmill. After you have owned the treadmill, take it to the next level- burn some sole on the track and under different weather conditions like sunny, humid, and rain.

Main Training

Increase your run mileage gradually each week. But taper off in the final weeks leading up to Race Day so that your body gets enough time to recover from training and you appear at the event stronger and fresher. Change Your Running Routine: Sprinting builds more muscle. Add a few 10- to 60-second sprints to your run, slowing down just long enough to catch your breath between them.

Hydration

If running for an hour or more, carry water/fluids with you. Make sure to drink 6-8 oz. every 20 minutes. During your pre-training and marathon training, weigh yourself before and after each run. Rehydrate to get your body weight back to the weight it was before the run. Do this by drinking water or sports drink within the first hours after the run.

Recovery

Recovery is critical and so, it is important that you take a break from the training. Allow your body to rest between runs so that it can recover from one run to the next, and your body gets stronger between each run. You can pick a cross training workout or an alternative to running to get the same benefits. Eating the right running foods at the right time also play a vital role in recovery.

Nutrition

Carbohydrates are important nutrition in a runner’s diet as they provide the required fuel. During marathon training, your total calorie intake should comprise of 65% carbohydrates (particularly, complex carbohydrates), 10% of protein, and 20-25% of unsaturated fats. Proper nutrition keeps you strong and allows for adequate recovery.

To avoid any injuries, it is crucial to recovering from sore muscles, cellular damage and suppressed immune system caused due to running for a long distance.

Here are eight things to do for quick recovery after marathon running:

  1. Soak your tired feet in hot water for pain relief.
  2. Catch a nap for 1-2 hours immediately after the run
  3. Post marathon you might want to laze around more but do walk around a little in between your rest. 
  4. Replenish the body with lots of water and eat protein and iron-rich foods.
  5. Shun from sports drinks, energy boosters, and junk foods.
  6. Give running a break and keep it to walking for a few days.
  7. Avoid Complex Stretches. Do some easy post-run stretches for some days after the marathon.
  8. Go for Yoga workouts and Cross-Training Activities to recover quickly
