As someone who is trekking for the first time, you need to understand that not all treks are same. Let’s introduce you to the three different types of difficulty levels.

Easy Trek
A trek that is 2-3 days long, involving lower altitudes and gentle slopes is considered as an easy trek. It does not involve more than 5-6 km walks in a day. Generally, first time trekker and beginners are recommended to attempt easy treks.

Moderate Trek
A moderate trek requires more stamina, as it includes climbing high valleys and walking for 6-7 hours a day for multiple days.

Hard Trek
Physical endurance and mental strength are tested to the extreme when you walk for long hours through rough mountain ranges at high altitudes. Moreover, the duration of the trek is more than a week.

Training to Trek

Being fit physically is vital ( Source )

Physical fitness is one of the most important prerequisites for any trek. Walking at high altitudes and rough weather conditions is totally different from taking a stroll in the park. As a first time trekker, it is essential that you know your limits, choose a suitable trek and then start training yourself. Here are some tips to help you prepare for the trek.

Exercise Consistently

Start walking short distances with the correct posture and increase the distance gradually. To prepare your legs for the strain of walking for long hours, take part in physical exercises and sports. Use the stairs and avoid the lift. To strengthen your quads and calf muscles, start with regular morning and evening walks, followed by jogging. Walking with a backpack will help you increase the strength in your legs. If you work out at the gym, focus more on cardio exercises.

Steer Clear from Smoking

At high altitudes, you need your lungs to function properly. Smoking harms your respiratory system, and hence, will affect your health. So, quit smoking at the earliest.

Focus on Eating Healthy Food

Consumption of healthy food and drinking ample amount of water is necessary. Start by making a diet chart during training, to allow your body to get accustomed to the changes in your eating habits.

Know Your Terrain

The first and foremost is an utmost knowledge of the terrain where the trek will take place. The weather, terrain, average time and the length of the trek should also be considered.
